I absolutely love photographing young women and men at such a crucial point in their lifetime. High School Graduation. This is a pivotal moment where they become what they have always wanted to be. This is where they get to chase their dreams. This is where they start their life as an adult.
To ensure that mom can have a beautiful portrait to have hanging on her wall, and a senior can have images that are Instagram share worthy, there are a few things to keep in mind for a senior shoot. See 10 of my top tips in preparing for a senior session.
Get Pampered. Have a professional do your hair, makeup, and nails, because it will make a world of difference in your photos.
Go Shopping. You do not have to buy a completely new wardrobe. Shop around in your own closet, borrow some friend’s amazing accessories, go to your local thrift store, or find some amazing designer pieces on RentTheRunway.com
Prep your skin. If you go tanning, ensure that you get your tan at least three days in advance to let the orange tones wash out a bit. Keep your skin hydrated and moisturized for a beautiful glow on the day of your session.
Bring props. Make sure you bring key pieces that define who you are. Bring an instrument, or poms poms, or even your German Shepherd. Style the shoot to who you are!
Bring Someone. Bring your mom, family member, significant other or a friend to help you throughout the day. They can be there to help carry your outfits, fix any loose hairs, and just for moral support and fun
Bring an emergency kit. You never know when you are going to need a bobby pin, hair spray, a tissue, or other necessities. Pack a small bag with all of the essentials. It is better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
Stylize. Figure out the look you are aiming for with these photos. Want to be a model for the day, with high-fashion outfits and posing? No problem. Want something a little more fun and relaxed at the beach? Of course. Envision what you want and let me know!
Get some rest. Make sure you get plenty of sleep the night before, drink plenty of water, and eat something before the session. Being a model is hard work and the energy is definitely needed.
Cushion your time. Be sure to account for any traffic or transportation delays so you can arrive on time for your shoot. Plan to be there at least 15 minutes early. The sun will set even if there is a traffic jam!
Relax. These photos are meant to be fun, so no need to stress! Do not worry about posing or anything else… I got you covered. All you have to do is use these few tips to prepare, show up, and look gorgeous!
